Configuring CMDB Mapping

Using the CMDB Mapping templates, data synchronization between the Asset Inventory and Configuration Management Database (CMDB) can be done easily (see: Dynamic Bidirectional auto sync of Asset Inventory and CMDB).  In these templates, field mapping is done based on the selected values of Asset Category and CMDB Classification. The user has to map the Asset and CMDB fields including the Custom Attributes. The user can configure multiple templates by specifying the Asset Category, CMDB Classification, Import Type, and Sync For value. The user can use the available configured templates when a Asset is added, or Asset details are updated in the Asset Inventory or CI is added or CI details are updated in CMDB. The template-based synchronization saves time and synchronizes multiple Assets and CI attributes at a time. This synchronization is useful during the Asset Discovery process. The SummitAl Service Management and SummitAI Asset Managementjointly allow CMDB import.

To configure CMDB Mapping Templates:

  1. Select Asset > Configuration > Mapping > CMDB Mapping.

  2. On the CMDB MAPPING page, select a Tenant and provide data in all the fields. Select appropriate Mapping Column for the Asset Attribute. For more information about the fields, see Field Description.

  3. Click SUBMIT. A CMDB Mapping template is configured.

Custom Scheduler Job

The job, Asset - CMDB Data Sync., should be configured on the CUSTOM SCHEDULER page (see: Custom Scheduler) for Asset-CMDB data synchronization. This job is responsible for synchronizing the observed hardware and software variance data between the Asset Inventory and CMDB. This job should be configured on the SummitAI Application Server. It is recommended to schedule this job to run once in 30 minutes.

Field Description

This table describes the fields available on the CMDB MAPPING page.

Field

Description

Tenant

Select the Tenant for which you want to configure the mapping.

Template Name

Specify the template name.

Asset Category

Select the Asset Category. Based on the selected Asset Category, all the static and dynamic attributes are populated under the mapping column. The static attributes are Asset Code and Store Location.

CMDB Classification

Select the CMDB Classification. Based on the CMDB Classification, all the static and dynamic attributes are populated under the Mapping Column.

For example, if Network is set as CMDB Classification, all the attributes related to CMDB Master, Network, and Additional Information tab attributes are populated under the Mapping Column. If Others is set as CMDB Classification, all the attributes (SERVER, NETWORK, and DESKTOP) are populated under the Mapping Column.

Import Type

Select the Import Type as Asset to CI or CI to Asset. The Asset details are imported based on the selected criterion.

  • Asset to CI Import: If add or update action is performed on an Asset, based on the template mapping fields, data is synchronized to CMDB (Add new CI or update CI). For example, when an add action is performed on an Asset, a new CI is added to CMDB, and the Asset detail are added to that newly added CI, synchronizing both Asset Inventory and CMDB.

  •  CI To Asset Import: If add or update action is performed on a CI, based on the template mapping fields, data is synchronized to the Asset Inventory (Add new Asset or update Asset). For example, when an add acton is performed on a CI, a new Asset is added to the Asset Inventory, and the CI detail are added to that newly added Asset, synchronizing both Asset Inventory and CMDB.

Sync For

Select a value for Sync For. Following are the values of Sync For field:

  • Add: If the value of Sync For is configured as ADD on the template, and the add action is to be performed on an Asset, the system automatically picks up this template, and the import action happens accordingly.
  • Update: If the value of Sync For is configured as UPDATE on the template, and the update is to be performed on an Asset, the system automatically picks up this template, and the import action happens accordingly.

Note: The Workgroup, Workgroup Owner, Customer, and Criticality fields needs to be configured while importing the Asset details to CI for an add action. However, these fields are disabled while importing these details for an update action.

Owner WorkgroupThis mandatory field is displayed if the Import Type is selected as Asset to CI Import. Select the owner Workgroup of the CI. The selected Owner Workgroup is mapped to the newly created CI.

Owner

This mandatory field is displayed if the Import Type is selected as Asset to CI Import. Select the owner of the CI. The selected Owner is mapped to the newly created CI.

Customer

This mandatory field is displayed if the Import Type is selected as Asset to CI Import. Select the Customer of the CI. The selected Customer is mapped to the newly created CI.

Note:

  • The Customer field value is based on the Asset status, which takes precedence over the value provided on the CMDB MAPPING page. If the Asset is in Allocated status and has a Customer assigned to that allocation, the assigned Customer is considered. If no Customer is available for that allocation at that time, the Customer of the Allocated User is considered. If no Customer is available, the user-specified Customer value on the CMDB MAPPING page is considered.
  • If the Allocated Asset has no Customer and Allocation is Multi-Allocation, the Customer of the latest user is considered.
  •  The Customer value specified by the user is second priority.

Criticality

This field is displayed if the Import Type is selected as Asset to CI Import. Select the Criticality of the CI from the list. The selected Criticality is mapped to the newly created CI.

Store

This field is displayed if the Import Type is selected as CI to Asset Import. Select the Store. The selected Store is assigned to the newly imported Asset.

Note:

  •  The Asset Store field value is disabled for Update action when the Import Type is selected as CI to ASSET Import.
  • The location configured for the CI precedes over the user-defined Store value.
Scenarios
  • Scenario 1: If CI location value is available in Asset Management Location Master, the new Asset is added under the latest selected Store.
  • Scenario 2: If CI location value is not available in Asset Management Location Master, a new Location and Store is in Asset Management. The newly added Store is mapped to the CI.
  • Scenario 3: If CI location is not defined, the Store value configured in the template is considered.
  • Scenario 4: If CI location is not available in Asset Management Master, a new Location with same name and new Store (example Bangalore store) is created in the AM master, and the new Asset is added to that Store.
  • Scenario 5: If CI location is available in Asset Management Master but no Store is available under it, a new Store is added and the Asset it added to it.

Conditions

Displays the configured conditions. Click  icon to specify the conditions. For more information about configuring conditions, see Field Description.

Active

If selected, this CMDB Mapping template becomes active.

Asset Attribute

The Asset Attribute column lists all the attribute fields of the selected Asset Category that can be mapped to the CMDB attributes.

Asset Attribute Type

This column lists the Asset Attribute Type as Dynamic or Static.

Mapping Column

This column lists all the attributes of the selected CMDB Classification value that needs to be mapped with the required Asset Category attributes. Select a value from the drop-down list. The selected drop-down value from the CMDB is mapped to the Asset attribute.
