What is WSUS Server?
Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) enables Information Technology Administrators to deploy the latest Microsoft product updates.
When new patches or updates are available, this server downloads them from the Microsoft server.
This is where Microsoft Windows release the patches, upgrades, hotfixes, and security improvements for its Operating Systems (OS) or various products like Office 365, Microsoft Azure, and so on.
Note
The release happens on the second Tuesday of every month.
SummitAI Patch Management Overview
SUMMIT Application provides patch management solutions, and these tools make use of the WSUS server. The WSUS server downloads Updates/Patches from Microsoft website. Based on approval from the Admin, the tools push these updates/patches to end user machines.
This is helpful during the situation where the end-user machines are not connected to the internet, instead are connected only to the Local Area network.
Role of Summit Application
Summit tool uses WSUS server to download and install the patches on the end user machine based on the approvals from System Administrators.
A System Administrator can choose the desired patches through the configuration settings on the WSUS Application Console which automatically connects to the Microsoft Website and downloads the patches directly from the Microsoft Server.
The Products and Classifications option in the WSUS Application Console allows the administrator to check and uncheck the desired patches based on the requirements.

Purpose of WSUS Server
As Microsoft is home to many products, the patch releases can be massive. If the user tries to download all the patches in a single attempt, this may result in space or storage issues in the hard disk and affect the downloading speed. These actions end up causing performance issues on the server.
To overcome these problems, patches of only few major products of Microsoft are configured for downloading.
Note
- Summit support ticket can be raised to enable any additional product (which is not enabled by default) which requires patch updates.
- For End-of-Support products, the patch is not supported, and patch sync will not be enabled.
