Microsoft Azure is a cloud computing service created by Microsoft for building, deploying, and managing applications and services through a global network of data centers managed by Microsoft.

The platform provided by Azure is used to host Virtual Machines (VM's). The VM's are monitored and the data is fetched by SUMMIT Proxy Server, and collected at the SUMMIT database.

To monitor and discover VM's through Azure using SUMMIT application, certain prerequisites need to be followed:

titlePrerequisites to be performed in Azure Portal
  1. In Azure Portal under Azure Active Directory, user should have minimum one registered application. Login to Azure Portal > Azure Active Directory > App registrations.

  2. Application should have access (Reader or Contributor or Owner) for all subscriptions. Login to Azure Portal > More Services > Subscriptions > Access Control (IAM).



  3. Application should have access Keys and it will be used for discovery and monitoring. Login to Azure Portal > Azure Active Directory > App registrations > Click on application > Keys. Specify the details in the Keys tab and click Save. The App Key appears only while saving, hence should be noted down.



  4. All Virtual Machines Guest level monitoring should be enabled. Login to Azure Portal > Virtual Machines > Diagnostics settings > click Enable guest level monitoring. Check CPU, Memory, Disk and Network under Performance Counters. Under Boot Diagnostics User should map the Storage Account.

    3. Enabling Performance Counters and Mapping Storage Accounts(For Non-Wintel VM's):



  5. For getting storage connection string application should have Contributor or Owner access on Storage (Which is mapped in VM Diagnostic Settings).
    Login to Azure Portal > Storage Accounts > Click on Mapped Storage > A Control (IAM) > Add Application With Contributor or Owner Role.



  6. Following Parameters should be configured for Discovery:
    • Directory ID :- Login to Azure Portal > Azure Active Directory > Properties.
    • Application ID : - Login to Azure Portal > Azure Active Directory>App Registration > Click on Application >Properties.
    • Application Key: - Login to Azure Portal > Azure Active Directory>App Registration>Click on Application>Keys.

titlePrerequisites to be performed in AWS Portal
  1. Login to Amazon Web Services (AWS) Portal using the URL https://console.aws.amazon.com.
  2. Go to Services> Security, Identity & Compliance> IAM.



  3. Click Groups > Create New Group.



  4. Specify the Group Name and click Next Step.



  5. Click Users > Add User.




  6. Once the user is created, the Access Key ID and Secret Access Key are displayed. Copy this credentials and paste them in SUMMIT CLOUD DISCOVERY page to monitor AWS.



  7. You can create multiple Access Keys by clicking User from User List > Security Credentials Tab > Create Access Key.

titlePrerequisites to be performed in SUMMIT Proxy
  1. Summit Proxy Server should have internet access as monitoring is happening on cloud environment.
  2. Summit Job scheduler service should run with administrator account. Log on to Proxy Server > Open Services.msc > Select Summit Job Scheduler Service (Right Click) > Properties > Log On. Enter the Administrator Account for running the service.



The VM's are discovered and added for monitoring using the CLOUD DISCOVERY page. The monitored data is displayed in the CLOUD DASHBOARD page.
On the CLOUD DASHBOARD page, you can view Azure and Amazon Web Services Dashboards.

Select the required dashboard from the Dashboard drop-down.

To view Azure Dashboard:

  1. Select Operations> User > Servers > Cloud Dashboard.
  2. On the CLOUD DASHBOARD page, select the Tenant and Refresh Page In value. The Azure Details available under the selected Tenant are displayed.



  3. To view the details, expand the Azure tree structure under AZURE DETAILS. The Azure structure comprises of Subscription, Resource, Resource Type and Resource Groups. A sample Azure structure is shown below:

    The items comprising the Azure structure are:

    • Subscription - It refers to the Azure subscription. Each subscription provides a unique subscription ID.
    • Resource - It refers to a manageable item that is available through Azure, such as virtual machines, storage account, extensions, disks, and so on.
    • Resource Type - It refers to a group comprising of similar set of resources.
    • Resource Group - It refers to a group that holds a set of Resource Types.
  4. To view the details of a Subscription, click the corresponding Subscription name in the Azure tree. The Subscription details are displayed along with the performance parameter graphs.

  5. To view the details of a Resource Group, click the corresponding Resource Group name in the Azure tree. The Resource Group details are displayed along with the performance parameter graphs.

  6. To view the details of a Resource Type i.e Virtual Machines, click Virtual Machines in the Azure tree. The Performance Parameter graphs for all the available Virtual Machines are displayed.
    To view the graph for individual Virtual machine, expand the Virtual Machine tree and click on the specific Virtual Machine. The details of the Resource and VM is displayed with its performance parameter graphs.

  7. To view the graph for a specific parameter under a specific Resource Group, click on any point in the graph of the respective parameter. The PERFORMANCE COUNTERS pop up page is displayed. You can also view the graph for a specific parameter under all Resource Groups by clicking on the parameter name displayed above each graph (such as CPU %). The PERFORMANCE COUNTERS pop up page is displayed.

    You can perform the following actions in the PERFORMANCE COUNTERS pop up page:

    • Enable or disable Threshold for a parameter by clicking on the Enable/Disable button. The threshold can be enabled or disabled for a single parameter, and only if a single resource is selected under Resources.
    • View performance graph for any required time period by clicking on the respective time period. The available options are 1 day, 7 days, 1 month, 6 months, and Custom.
    • View performance graphs for multiple parameters for a single resource under Resources, by selecting the required parameters under Available metrics. You cannot view graphs for multiple parameters for multiple resources.
    • View detailed graph (polling interval level) by zooming in. The detailed graph can be viewed only if a single parameter is selected. To zoom in, select an area of the graph.

titleAmazon Web Services Dashboard

To view Amazon Web Services Dashboard:

  1. Select Operations > User > Servers > Cloud Dashboard.

  3. To view the details, expand the Azure AWS tree structure under AZURE  DETAILSAMAZON WEB SERVICES DETAILS. The Azure AWS structure comprises of SubscriptionAccount, ResourceRegion, Resource Type, and Resource Groups. A sample Azure AWS structure is shown below:

    • Account - It refers to the AWS subscription. Each subscription provides a unique Account ID.
    • Region - It refers to the region to which the resource type belongs to, such as Global, Asia Pacific and so on.
    • Resource Type - It refers to a group comprising of similar set of resources
    • Resource - It refers to a manageable item that is available through AWS, such as virtual machines, storage account, extensions, disks, and so on.
  4. To view the details of an Account, click the corresponding Account name in the AWS tree. The Account details are displayed along with the performance parameter graphs.

  5. To view the details of a Region, click the corresponding Region name in the AWS tree. The Region details are displayed along with the performance parameter graphs.

  6. To view the details of a Resource Type i.e Elastic Compute Cloud, click EC2 type in the AWS tree. The Performance Parameter graphs for all the available EC2 types are displayed.

  7. To view the graph for a specific parameter under a specific Resource Group, click on any point in the graph of the respective parameter. The PERFORMANCE COUNTERS pop up page is displayed.
