Desktop monitor attributes Discovery
Desktop monitor attributes Discovery
Most IT organizations usually have a wide range of hardware resources, including desktop and laptop computers, servers, routers, scanners, and printers. Nowadays, multiple monitors are connected to a single desktop device. These devices host a wide range of applications and offer multitasking capabilities for the User.
Considering the exponential increase in computing power and scalability required for these kinds of applications; it is desirable to use multiple monitors as they can cater to a multitude of Users. In such a desktop-centric environment, identifying and tracking the device status of these assets is always a huge task!
In the SummitAI Discovery module, the Auto-Discovery tool discovers the monitor attributes of Linux and Windows desktop computers. The tool also displays the Discovery scan details of the devices configured for a specific job.
The following illustration shows an example of single monitor serial number Discovery for Windows desktop machines.

How is SummitAI implementing it?
In the SummitAI Discovery feature, Discovery Analyst or Asset Manager can configure the following functionality:
- Define wmi (Windows Management Instrumentation) Namespace from the Discovery template to scan desktop monitor serial number.
- Capture the desktop monitor attributes from the root\ wmi Namespace (for windows).
- Map the appropriate column names with the queried attributes of a display or monitor.
Refer to the Use cases for Desktop Monitor Serial Number Discovery feature.

Features and Functionality
Refer to the table for the list of key Features and their description at the Analyst level.
Table: Features and their description
Serial No | Feature Name | Feature Description |
1 | Add the Namespace column to scan in the Discovery template. | Defines the placeholder for Namespace, edits the wmi scan template, or adds a new template. |
2 | Discover using root or wmi Namespace. | Get the device attributes (Serial Number ID, Product code ID) by the root\ wmi Namespace. |
3 | Map the appropriate column names with the queried attributes of a display or monitor. | Captures Discovery information in widget scan table. |
4 | Trigger notification messages for missing Namespace information in the Discovery template. | Displays a pop-up message with a warning to fill the Namespace value for missing template details.
|
5 | Handle wmi Namespace error logs. | Analyses the error logs of missing Namespaces and displays the error messages of Discovery scan details.
|
6 | Auto Discovery of Linux desktop serial number. |
|
Feature Benefits:
- Provides visibility to the additional monitors in a desktop-centric environment.
- Displays the serial number, week, year of manufacture, product code, and hostname of desktop devices in the Discovery report.
- Helps in enhancing the Tracking and traceability of these monitor devices.
Pre-requisites:
- The user should be a Discovery Analyst or an Asset Manager.
- Valid credentials with privileges to read root\WMI namespace on all Windows devices.
